Chapter 13

The sudden appearance of a man I thought possibly dead is a little bit off-putting. As we drive back in the car to Susan’s, she keeps telling me that the judge was never seen with Laura. She just wasn’t one of his crowd. John Carson was. John Carson’s wife and various other people she mentions, but not Laura. I make the decision that I need to get into that house, see what the deal is with the judge. I’m not ready to talk to him personally yet, but if I can get in and see any of his computers or anything else, I might have a chance working out what’s going on.

John Carson’s also a man I haven’t spoken to yet and with Susan mentioning his name again, it makes me think I should pop and see him. Too often he’s popped round and seen Alison Hadleigh. So, what’s the connection there? I had thought John possibly might have bumped off the judge, but that’s clearly not true. So why does he keep coming round and bothering Alison? Why do they look like they’re having some sort of an affair? And what’s this large meeting that’s going to happen? There’s not a lot I can do about the meeting, except go to it when it’s there. We know the hotel; we know where it’s at. But in the meantime, I’ll go and take a look at John Carson’s this evening. See if I can’t find a bit more out about him in his home. And then maybe in the small hours, I’ll go back and see the judge.

But these sorts of things are not for Susan. She might be becoming an employee of mine, but I don’t risk that sort of thing to a newbie. And after breaking of the rules, following me when I told her not to, I’m not sure I’m going to trust her on a stakeout. On the way back in the car, I point out her error, and in fairness, she’s contrite. I pointed out if he’d seen her come out, her cover would’ve been blown. He’d wonder what she was doing there because he knows her. And then she argued that she didn’t know the judge was in there. I pointed out that quite often we don’t know who we’re looking at—that’s the whole point. If we did, we wouldn’t need to go around nosing.

I think she’s a little dispirited. So, I get her to stop off at a small cafe and I buy her a dinner. It seems to cheer her up. She talks enthusiastically about working for me. I’m trying to foster that big brother/little sister relationship because that’s what I want her to be, and she seems to be going with it. She’s grabbing hold of Paddy, leaning on Paddy, or maybe that just came from seeing her first body, especially a cut-up one. Hopefully, the initial infatuation of an older man that plays golf has dropped off. It’s nine o’clock when I drop her home, pick up my own car, and head off to see John Carson.
