Chapter 13
The sudden appearance of a man I thought possibly dead is a little bit off-putting. As we drive back in the car to Susanâs, she keeps telling me that the judge was never seen with Laura. She just wasnât one of his crowd. John Carson was. John Carsonâs wife and various other people she mentions, but not Laura. I make the decision that I need to get into that house, see what the deal is with the judge. Iâm not ready to talk to him personally yet, but if I can get in and see any of his computers or anything else, I might have a chance working out whatâs going on.
John Carsonâs also a man I havenât spoken to yet and with Susan mentioning his name again, it makes me think I should pop and see him. Too often heâs popped round and seen Alison Hadleigh. So, whatâs the connection there? I had thought John possibly might have bumped off the judge, but thatâs clearly not true. So why does he keep coming round and bothering Alison? Why do they look like theyâre having some sort of an affair? And whatâs this large meeting thatâs going to happen? Thereâs not a lot I can do about the meeting, except go to it when itâs there. We know the hotel; we know where itâs at. But in the meantime, Iâll go and take a look at John Carsonâs this evening. See if I canât find a bit more out about him in his home. And then maybe in the small hours, Iâll go back and see the judge.
But these sorts of things are not for Susan. She might be becoming an employee of mine, but I donât risk that sort of thing to a newbie. And after breaking of the rules, following me when I told her not to, Iâm not sure Iâm going to trust her on a stakeout. On the way back in the car, I point out her error, and in fairness, sheâs contrite. I pointed out if heâd seen her come out, her cover wouldâve been blown. Heâd wonder what she was doing there because he knows her. And then she argued that she didnât know the judge was in there. I pointed out that quite often we donât know who weâre looking atâthatâs the whole point. If we did, we wouldnât need to go around nosing.
I think sheâs a little dispirited. So, I get her to stop off at a small cafe and I buy her a dinner. It seems to cheer her up. She talks enthusiastically about working for me. Iâm trying to foster that big brother/little sister relationship because thatâs what I want her to be, and she seems to be going with it. Sheâs grabbing hold of Paddy, leaning on Paddy, or maybe that just came from seeing her first body, especially a cut-up one. Hopefully, the initial infatuation of an older man that plays golf has dropped off. Itâs nine oâclock when I drop her home, pick up my own car, and head off to see John Carson.
